But we need everyone's help to make the event the best it can be!

HOW YOU CAN HELP

DECORATIONS
If your home or business is located along the ride routes, please consider putting up a few lights or decorations a little early this year to make a lovely view for those who are riding around. The attached map shows the new route (in green) for the sleigh rides, hay rides, train ride and horse and carriage rides. The firetruck rides (in red) pick up near the Olde Town Pub and run to the Governmental Center.

 CAROLING
If you have a group from church, scouts, work or school who would like to provide some caroling at Tudor Hall, please contact Maria Fleming at the Town office - 301-475-9791 as soon as possible. We need a few more groups to help round out the schedule.

Neighborhood Safety Reminder

Every so often we need a reminder that as members of the community everyone plays a huge role in creating a safe environment by communicating what you see and hear in your respective neighborhood. We are asking that residents take a proactive role and report any suspicious persons or vehicles.

Secure your vehicles and home at night - make it part of your evening routine to check that all doors and window are locked before you retire for the evening. Stay vigilant in your efforts to maintain the security of your homes by locking all windows and doors, work together with your neighbors to identify any suspicious activity, and if you see something, say something.

Diligent security efforts helps thwart access to your personal belongings and helps keeps our community a safe environment.

Contact the St. Mary’s Sheriff’s Department for any emergency.

Changes to Commercial Trash and Recycling Collection Schedules and Contractor

FOR COMMERICAL

TOWN OF LEONARDTOWN

COMMERCIAL TRASH AND RECYCLING CUSTOMERS

TRANSITION FROM GOODE COMPANIES TO

AFFORDABLE REFUSE AND RECYCLING

After a competitive bid process, the Town Council of Leonardtown recently awarded a five year trash and recycling collection contract to Affordable Refuse and Recycling, Inc.  This contractor will begin serving Leonardtown customers on July 1, 2014.  The goal of the transition plan is to execute this contractor change with no interruption in your service.  Please take a moment to review this information to determine how this change will affect you and what you can do to help.  If you have any questions before, during, or after the transition, please contact the Town Office at 301-475-9791.

How will you exchange my existing garbage and recycling containers?
Beginning the week of June 16th, the new contractor will begin swapping out containers for commercial customers.  This process will likely take two weeks, with the goal of having all containers exchanged by July 1st.  When your Goode Companies’ container is removed, an Affordable Refuse’s container will immediately be put in place to ensure no interruption in service.  Regardless of which company’s container is on site, Goode Companies will continue collecting your garbage and recyclables until July 1st

What if I use toters instead of a metal front load container?
Continue to use the Goode Companies’ toters until they are exchanged with Affordable Refuse’s toters.  The new contractor anticipates it will take a few weeks for all existing toters to make their way out of the system.  They will collect garbage and recyclables like usual and swap out the toters along the way.  Please be patient as they work through the transition.  Your waste will be collected regardless of which toter is at the curb.  If your toters have not been exchanged by July 18th, please report this to the Town Office at 301-475-9791.

Will my collection schedule change?
Maybe.  Every effort will be made to contact customers who will have changes to their collection schedule.  If you are not contacted by a Town representative, you should assume that your collection schedule will remain the same.  The most significant change will be for customers that utilize cardboard recycling.  The main collection day will be moved from Wednesday to Tuesday.

What if I currently have a locking container?
Affordable Refuse will exchange with another locking container.

How will this change affect my quarterly charge?
This change is effective July 1, 2014.  You will not see a change in your quarterly charge until the September 30, 2014 billing period.  The new service charges will not be approved by the Town Council until June 16th, but we expect the new quarterly trash charge for most customers will be up to 34% less than your existing charge!

Changes to Residential Trash and Recycling Collection Schedules and Contractor

FOR RESIDENTS

TOWN OF LEONARDTOWN

SINGLE FAMILY RESIDENTIAL CUSTOMERS

CHANGES TO TRASH AND RECYCLING COLLECTION SCHEDULES

EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2014

After a competitive bid process, the Town Council of Leonardtown recently awarded a five year trash and recycling collection contract to Affordable Refuse and Recycling, Inc.  This contractor will begin serving Leonardtown customers on July 1, 2014.  The goal of the transition plan is to execute this contractor change with no interruption in your service.  Please take a moment to review this information to determine how this change will affect you and what you can do to help.  If you have any questions before, during, or after the transition, please contact the Town Office at 301-475-9791.

How often will garbage be collected?
Twice per week.  Your collection days may change.  See the attached list to determine your collection days.

How often will commingled recyclables be collected?
Once per week.  All recyclables will be collected on Wednesday.

Will my collection time change?
Probably.  It may take a few weeks for the new crew to establish routine collection times.  Please make sure your toter is at the curb by 7:00am on collection days.  If you are concerned that your toter was missed, please call the Town Office as soon as possible.  If the collection truck is still in Town, they may be able to return to collect it the same day.

What do I do with my existing Goode Companies’ toters?
These garbage and recycling toters belong to Goode Companies.  Continue to use them and place them at the curb until they are replaced with new toters provided by Affordable Refuse.  Your new toters will be delivered simultaneously with pickup of your existing toters.

What if I don’t have existing toters?
You are not required to use toters.  You can continue to use your own containers, and the garbage and recyclables will be collected as usual.  If you would like to start using toters in the future, just call the Town Office at 301-475-9791 and delivery will be scheduled.  This is a free service, but all toters remain the property of Affordable Refuse.

What will the new toters look like?
New toters will be black.  You will receive one toter for garbage and another toter for recycling.  The recycling toter will have a yellow top and be clearly marked RECYCLING ONLY.  The recycling toter will be the same size as the garbage toter.  This decision was made to encourage as much recycling as possible.

What if I am out of town when this change occurs and my toters are not at the curb?
The new contractor anticipates it will take a few weeks for all existing toters to make their way out of the system.  They will collect garbage and recyclables like usual and swap out the toters along the way.  Please be patient as they work through the transition.  Your waste will be collected regardless of which toter is at the curb.  If your toters have not been exchanged by July 18th, please report this to the Town office at 301-475-9791.

How will this change affect my quarterly charge?
This change is effective July 1, 2014.  You will not see a change in your quarterly charge until the September 30, 2014 billing period.  The new service charges will not be approved by the Town Council until June 16th, but we expect the new quarterly charge will be less than $53.00; a savings of 23%!

What if I need backdoor service?
Affordable Refuse will continue to provide backdoor service to those residents that have a permanent or temporary disability that prevents placement of toters at the curb.  We ask that you please call the Town Office prior to July 1st to discuss your circumstances and make arrangements for this service.

Will holidays affect the collection schedule?
Certain holidays will affect the collection schedule.  The Town’s newsletter, website, and social media accounts will be updated to remind residents about changes to collection schedules.  In general, when a holiday is observed by Affordable Refuse and Recycling, Inc., all collection schedules for the remainder of the week following the holiday will slide forward by one day.  This is referred to as “holiday slide”.

Why does the collection company leave the lid open after the toter is emptied?
An open lid allows the supervisor and customer to know that the toter has been emptied.

Construction Update - Captain Walter Francis Duke Elementary School

Work along the Leonard’s Grant Parkway will begin on or about May 5, 2014 and will last approximately eight weeks. The purpose of the work is to connect the new school to the public water and sewer system located on the parkway near the entrance to Leonard’s Grant. The pedestrian path will be removed along the entire length of the school’s property and will not be available for use until the completion of the work along the parkway.

Work will begin no earlier than 8 a.m. and will end no later than 5 p.m. Monday through Friday only. Vehicles entering or leaving Leonard’s Grant at the work zone will need to use caution during this period. On occasions, flagmen will be directing traffic as necessary. The parkway will not be closed completely at any time. St. Mary’s County Public Schools, our General Contractor, Scheibel Construction, and the Town of Leonardtown are working together to make the work along the parkway as small an inconvenience as possible for the residents and visitors of Leonard’s Grant. St. Mary’s County Public Schools will continue to communicate on construction activities that may impact the residents of Leonard’s Grant.

We encourage all residents to check the web site for Captain Walter Francis Duke Elementary School at http://schools.smcps.org/cwfdes/next-thirty-days for continuing updates.

We thank all involved for their patience in this matter. Work on the school and school site is progressing on schedule and much construction progress on Captain Walter Francis Duke Elementary School will be observed over the coming months.

4/12/14 Hospice Run Travel Advisory and Route Changes

Annual Run & Fun Walk to Benefit Hospice Set for Saturday

The Annual Run and Fun Walk for Hospice is set for Saturday, April 12 at 8:30 AM at the Governmental Center in Leonardtown. Over the years, the event has developed into both annual rite of spring and a Southern Maryland tradition. Longtime volunteer Jim Dicus, along with friends Jamie and Jeff Thomas, founded the event 19 years ago to raise funds and increase awareness of the Hospice philosophy of providing compassionate care to the terminally ill. “The thousands of participants who come out and support this event every year – they are all hospice volunteers for a day” said Dicus. 100% of all net proceeds from the event stay in St. Mary’s County and go towards offsetting the cost of providing care to patients who may have limited or no insurance for end of life care. Or to fund grief and bereavement programs and camps for family members – such as a child who’s lost a parent or sibling. “We don’t turn anyone away”.

TRAFFIC ADVISORY – ROUTE CHANGES
This year the police and organizers will NOT be shutting down the Route 5 intersection; however, motorists are advised there may be delays in the Leonardtown area from 8:30 to 9:30 AM. The Fun Walk will proceed through the downtown area of Leonardtown. To mitigate and minimize effects on traffic at the intersection, 5K Run has a new course:

5K RUN COURSE – THIS IS A DIFFERENT ROUTE THAN PREVIOUS YEARS

The 5K run will start simultaneously with the 10K event. Runners will start in front of Carter Building and will cross Route 245 with the Walkers. They will follow the right shoulder of Route 245 and then turn RIGHT onto to Doctor’s Crossing Way. The 5K Course will then turn RIGHT onto Miss Bessie Drive, RIGHT onto Moakley Street, make a TURNAROUND at the dead end on Moakley and make a 2nd TURNAROUND near the Board of Education Building. Runners will then proceed RIGHT onto Miss Bessie Drive, left onto Route 245, crossing back over Route 245 at Baldridge Street and finish at the Carter Building. 5K RUNNERS always stay to right of the road and only cross Route 245 at the entrances of the Governmental Center.
If you are travelling on Route 245/Hollywood Road/Washington Street or if you live in the Singletree neighborhood, please be prepared for delays. This is a rain or shine event. For more information call 240-925-5423 or visit www.runforhospice.org.

The event is known for its inclusive, friendly and festive atmosphere. There is ample free parking, and the event is ideal for the novice runner competing for the first time. There are numerous volunteers on staff to assist with registration or answer any questions. The courses are well marked, and both the 5K and 10K runs are paced with vehicles and monitored. The event is professionally timed and scored. However, you don’t have to be a runner to enjoy the event. Approximately 1/3 of the participants sign up for the Fun walk. It’s fun, and it’s for a great cause.
