Cedar Lane Annual $10,000 Raffle
Dear Friend,
As the President and CEO of Cedar Lane Senior Living
Community, I want to thank you once again your support of last year’s $10,000
raffle. The raffle is Cedar Lane’s major annual fundraiser, and provides
funding for programs and facility improvements. In fact, the proceeds from last
year’s raffle were paired with a generous private donation to help us complete
Phase I of our Resident Dining Room Renovation Project. Thanks, in part,
to your support, our residents now enjoy a more comfortable and inviting dining
room complete with warm paint; crown molding; new carpet; new, brighter
lighting; and new, handicap-accessible tables and chairs. I am hoping you
will continue to help enhance the lives of the residents at Cedar Lane by lending
your support to this year’s raffle.
Cedar Lane is the oldest and largest non-profit senior
housing community in Leonardtown, Maryland. For 36 years, we have provided affordable housing, assisted
living, socialization and support services to enable low- and moderate-income
seniors to age in place in the community they love. Many of the more than 200
seniors that call Cedar Lane home rely on our various amenities and services to
stay active and engaged; and 90 percent of our residents depend on our assistance
with meals, medication management and housekeeping to maintain their health,
independence and quality of life.
In difficult economic times like these we need the support
of the community more than ever to help ensure that we can continue to meet the
needs of low-income seniors and disabled adults. Our Annual $10,000
Raffle is an easy and fun way for you to lend your support and to help us
continue this vital work.
I hope you will support this very
worthwhile cause by purchasing one or more raffle tickets today. This year’s
drawing will be held on Friday, November 29, 2013 during the
Christmas on the Square & Annual Christmas Tree Lighting at Leonardtown
Square. Tickets are $100 each, and with a maximum of 500 tickets
being sold, the odds of winning are very favorable.
Remember a maximum of only 500
tickets will be sold, so don’t delay! If you prefer, you can call me at
my number listed below or email me at bstickles@cedarlaneapts.com with
your request and I will reserve a ticket for you.
Please make your check payable to “Friends of
Cedar Lane” and mail to my attention at Cedar Lane Senior Living Community
22680 Cedar Lane Court, Leonardtown, Maryland 20650.
Thank you in advance for helping
to make a difference in the lives of seniors and disabled adults.
And, good luck!

Public Workshop on Land Use Study around NAS Patuxent River
The public is invited to participate in a presentation and round-table discussion of the Joint Land Use Study (JLUS), which addresses compatibility planning for the areas surrounding Naval Air Station Patuxent River (NAS PAX). The Tri-County Council for Southern Maryland, in cooperation with regional planning organizations including: the Mid-Shore Regional Council, Tri-County Council of the Lower Eastern Shore, Northern Neck Planning District Commission, local jurisdictions, and other agencies and organizations, is conducting a JLUS to identify current and / or potential land use issues that could impact the NAS PAX missions and operations and develop recommendations to mitigate or prevent the issues identified.
The study’s objective is to develop a set of recommendations that will guide compatibility planning around NAS PAX to accommodate new growth and economic development, protect public health and safety, and sustain the operational missions of the base. The JLUS will explore how NAS PAX and local jurisdictions might work together through enhanced communication and coordination to best achieve the mutual goals of all stakeholders.
The first set of workshops will be held throughout the region in four different locations, and each workshop will be tailored to the specific location it is being conducted in.
The Southern Maryland region workshop will be held for St. Mary’s County, Charles County, and Calvert County on:

Time: 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Location: Bay District Volunteer Fire Department (public meeting room)

The public is encouraged to join us at this workshop and learn m
ore about this planning process and provide their input on the issues relevant to the JLUS. To develop a plan that is responsive to local needs, it is critical to obtain input from the community.

around Town, and you get to vote for your favorite piece! Get your ballot from the August 29 issue of The County Times or pick one up one at
any participating Art Walk location. You
may hand in your completed ballot at the Leonardtown Arts Center anytime during
the week, but the first 100 people to turn in their ballot during the First
Friday event will receive a Leonardtown Swag Bag full of handy items and
coupons from local businesses.
Bring the kids for hands-on
activities and crafts at Yellow Door Art Studios, and visit with the cast of
College of Southern Maryland’s production of Farndale Avenue Housing Estate
Townswomen's Guild Dramatic Society's Production of Murder Mystery. Just
outside the Leonardtown Arts Center, viewers can become artists themselves by combining
pre-made crocheted pieces into a colorful, ever-changing community sculpture akin
to The Smithsonian Coral Reef.
Friendly Arts Ambassadors will be staged around the Town to
help you find all these activities and more at Crazy for Ewe, Fuzzy Farmers
Market, and the Friends of the Leonardtown Theater display – they will even point
you in the direction of the cupcake table!
So please join us for September First Fridays’ Celebration of the Arts
and Entertainment Designation, Friday, September 6, 2013 from 5 - 8 p.m. For more information visit leonardtownfirstfridays.com and leonardtown.somd.com or call the Town Office at 301-475-9791.

The Child Safety Seat and Survival Connection
The Child Safety Seat and Survival Connection
Motor vehicle
crashes are the number one cause of death among children ages 1 to 19. When installed and used correctly, child
safety seats can reduce fatal injury by up to 71 percent for infants and 54
percent for toddlers. Keeping our kids
safe on and off our roadways is a community concern. While 96 percent of parents and caregivers
believe their child safety seats are installed correctly, research shows that
seven out of 10 children are improperly restrained. That is why the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s
Office sends selected Deputies to receive training and certification in the
installation of Child Safety Seats. Once
certified Deputies are able to take their training out into the community and
partner with community members to ensure their children are safe while
travelling on our roadways.
On June 22, 2013, from 9:00 am
to noon, members of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office hosted a Child
Safety Seat checkpoint in front of the Sheriff’s Office at the request of The
Town of Leonardtown. Numerous vehicles
stopped in to the checkpoint and Sheriff’s Deputy’s were on site to check
already installed child safety seats, ensure they were properly installed and
provided hands on training and feedback for community members.
Q: What should parents expect when they get
their child’s safety seat inspected?
A. Certified technicians will conduct the child safety seat inspection. The certified inspector will:
·
Check the child safety seat to see that it has
been properly installed.
·
Remove and inspect the child safety seat for
damage.
·
Diagnose problems.
·
Ensure the child safety seat is not a recalled
model.
·
Get information about children riders from the
vehicle owner (size and weight of child, etc.)
·
Ensure the child safety seat is appropriate for
the size and age of the child.
·
Teach the auto owner the correct procedure to
properly and safely install the child safety seat in his or her auto.
·
Show the parent or caregiver how to secure the
child in the seat.
·
Discuss other vehicles and safety seats they own,
and provide instructions to repeat the correct procedure with other seats or
when installing the seat in other cars.
Maryland’s Child Passenger Safety Laws
Transportation Article 22-412.2 (Child Restraints)
Maryland’s law (effective October, 2012) requires
that:
·
Children under eight years old are to ride in an
appropriate child restraint,* unless the child is 4’9” or taller.
Child restraint includes car seats and booster seats and other
federally approved safety devices.
·
Every child from 8 to 16 years old who is not
secured in a child restraint must be secured in the vehicle’s seat belt, in
every seating position in the vehicle.
·
This law is applicable to in-state and
out-of-state vehicles.
·
It is the driver’s responsibility for making sure
all children are correctly buckled up
If you are interested in hosting a Child Seat Safety Checkpoint or
would like more information
regarding Child Safety Seats, visit www.safekids.org or contact the St.
Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Enforcement Division, Attention Dfc.
Kevin Meyer at 301-475-4200.
