Sandbags Available for Residents as Part of Storm Preparations

Sandbags Available for Residents as Part of Storm Preparations

Leonardtown, MD - The St. Mary’s County Department of Public Works & Transportation advises residents of the following:

As a part of the readiness and pre-emergency phase, the County is making sandbags available for use by residents. This is a self-serve process and staff will be on-site to monitor, but will have limited availability to assist in the filling or loading of sandbags.
Sandbags are not pre-filled and each individual will be limited to between 10-25 sandbags while supplies last.

Sand, bags, and shovels will be available at all six (6) convenience centers for County residents wishing to obtain sandbags in preparation for the effects of Hurricane Joaquin.

The convenience centers are located at:

Charlotte Hall – 37766 New Market Turner Road
Oakville – 26630 North Sandgates Road
Clement’s – 24547 Horseshoe Road
St. Andrews – 44595 St. Andrews Church Road
Valley Lee – 45350 Happyland Road
Ridge – 13939 Point Lookout Road

The convenience centers will operate under extended hours for this effort as follows:
Thursday, October 1, 2015: from noon to 6:30 pm
Friday, October 2, 2015: from 8:00 am to 6:30 pm
Saturday, October 3, 2015: return to normal hours from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm

Approximately 1,000 sandbags and 20 tons of sand will initially be available at each site.
Additional bags are scheduled for delivery Thursday afternoon.
Sandbags provide limited protection, but are intended to redirect small storm water and debris flows away from structures. It is suggested that residents lay a plastic sheet between the building and the bags to control the flow and prevent water from seeping into the door or window wells.
Generally the placement of bags is stacked up to three layers with each bag being tamped into place.

P.O. BOX 653  CHESAPEAKE BUILDING  41770 BALDRIDGE STREET, LEONARDTOWN, MD 20650
PHONE 301.475.4200 X1342  FAX 301.475.8491  www.stmarysmd.com

If sand is not available, residents are advised to use local soil. When sandbags are not available, other containers (i.e. small plastic grocery bags and pillow cases) can be utilized. Once used, homeowners should empty the material in the bags into their yards and then properly discard the bags.

IMPORTANT RECYCLING INFORMATION

IMPORTANT RECYCLING INFORMATION

Affordable Refuse has informed us that plastic bags are wreaking havoc on the processing machines.

The recycling facility is requiring that bags be taken out of the recycling stream.  Worst case scenario is they will stop accepting recyclables and it all goes to the incinerator at a higher customer cost.

All plastic bags should be put in the garbage or recycled at a local vendor (some grocery stores provide receptacles for plastic bags).

Recyclables should be put in the toters loose.

If customers accumulate their recyclables in plastic bags in the house, they should be dumped out of the bags when taken to the toter.  Paper bags are acceptable.  Each member of the household, or your cleaning service, should be informed of this.

Please, immediately, discontinue using and placing any plastic bags in the recycling toter.  This help us, your neighbors and Affordable Refuse and will also help maintain the present trash service costs.

Thank you.

Get Creative!

Be a More Creative Person in 4 Short Weeks

1.       Exploration - Not sure where to start? Start in Leonardtown!  The whole family can relax, socialize, listen to music, meet local artists and play with hands-on art demos at Arts & Entertainment First Friday Celebration and Art Walk on September 4, 2015, from 5 – 8 p.m.   In celebration of Leonardtown’s Arts & Entertainment District, jazz trio Higher Standards will be serenading visitors as they move from demo stations to galleries to boutiques, taking in the sights, sounds and tastes of Leonardtown.  Local authors will be signing books, and artists will be located around the Square, creating works from start to finish and inviting passersby to try something new!  Near the Leonardtown Arts Center, a “paint-out” vignette will be staged for anyone who wishes to paint, sketch or sculpt with a live model.
Participants in the Art Walk around Town will see finished works from local artists, discover a variety of artistic styles and materials, and be able to vote for their favorite piece.  Ballots will be available in the September 3 issue of The County Times, or at any participating ArtWalk location.

Artists who wish to submit to the ArtWalk should contact Nell Elder at the St. Mary’s County Arts Council info@smcart.org.

Artists who wish to sell their work and/or provide demonstrations in the Square for this event should contact Maria Fleming at the Commissioners of Leonardtown:  maria.fleming2@verizon.net.

Artists wishing to set up for the paint out can contact Nicole Stewart at nstewart@olg.com.
For more information on the event visit leonardtownfirstfridays.com .

2.    Inspiration – Learn to think differently, step outside your comfort zone and change your perspective.   No better place for this than at The Clazzical Project concert, Saturday, September 5, 2015, starting at 6 p.m. in the Leonardtown Square.
What if Mozart had been born in Havana? What would it sound like if Dave Brubeck had written Beethoven's Symphony No. 9?   On Saturday, September 5th, enjoy unique versions of classical music in contemporary jazz styles performed by The Clazzical Project:   Don Stapleson on flute, his fellow St. Mary’s alum Peter Fields on guitar, and Fred Lieder the cello.
By thinking “outside the Bachs” the trio has developed a playlist that includes, “Bachbird” (combining the Prelude from Bach’s Cello Suite No 1 in G Major with “Bye Bye Blackbird”), “Blueberry Madigan” (Mozart’s Elvira Madigan meets “Blueberry Hill”), “Havana Nacht Musik” (The Rondo from Mozart’s Eine Kliene Nachtmusik as an Afro-Cuban piece), and “Mars the Bringer of da’ Funk” (Gustav Holst plays that funky music).
Please bring blankets and chairs to sit on, and enjoy one of the many restaurants for dinner before the show.
3.          Participation – The Art*Work*Shop on Saturday, September 12, 2015, from 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. invites people of all ages to challenge themselves, learn new skills, benefit from expert teachers, be confident, feel accomplished, and go home with something they created!
This first time event allows participants to explore art venues and studios around Leonardtown for a full day of hands-on, educational, creative workshops with professional artists.  Students can brush up on skills, gain some experience, or try something completely new!  Included in the cost of each seminar are materials and instruction for a creative take home project, including drawings, paintings, jewelry, fiber arts, music, dance and so much more!
Registration is now open for classes including shadow knitting, felting animal sculptures, Raku ceramics, poetry writing, dance, photography, Ikebana flower arranging, bead crochet, painting, clay/stoneware, stained glass, fabric colored-in appliqué and music.  Classes are available for all ages and skill levels at a variety of price points.    Class details, registration and payment information can be found at the St. Mary’s County Arts Council website, stmarysartscouncil.com.   If you have further questions please contact Nell Elder at info@smcart.org.

4.       Motivation  – Don’t stop now!  Continue to socialize, have fun, improve your skills, and try new things – including foods - right here in Leonardtown!
Taste of St. Mary’s on Sunday, September 20, 2015, from 12 noon – 4:30 p.m.  showcases food and beverage establishments from around  the County, who offer food samples from their menus for a fraction of the price.

Yellow Door Art Studio, Caught My Eye, Wine & Design, Quality Street Kitchen and Catering, and the College of Southern Maryland all have classes for community education.  Now is the time to take advantage of all the opportunities available in Leonardtown to become the creative person you want to be!

The Clazzical Project Returns to the Leonardtown Square!

On Saturday, September 5th in Leonardtown, Maryland as part of the Leonardtown Summer Concerts on the Square, come enjoy unique versions of classical music in contemporary jazz styles performed by The Clazzical Project.  Guests will hear Don Stapleson on flute, his fellow St. Mary’s alum Peter Fields on guitar, and Fred Lieder the cello.
The performance will start at 6 p.m. and take place on the Square in Historic Downtown Leonardtown:  22735 Washington St. Leonardtown, MD 20650.  Please bring blankets and chairs to sit on, and enjoy one of the many restaurants for dinner before the show.

- Havana Nacht Musik (The Rondo from Mozarts Eine Kliene Nachtmusik as an Afro-Cuban piece)
- Mars the Bringer of da’ Funk (Gustav Holst plays that funky music)

Known throughout the D.C. area, gifted jazz and classical flutist Don Stapleson is the director of the St. Mary's College Jazz Bands; performs with his own group, The Don Stapleson Quartet; and plays flute and piccolo with the Chesapeake Orchestra.  He has shared the stage with Ray Charles, Dexter Gordon, Nancy Wilson, Wayne Newton and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Martha Reeves; for the performance with Clazzical Jam, Mr. Stapleson will demonstrate his mastery of a Muramatsu flute with a Drelinger Up Rite head joint.
Peter Fields has captivated audiences in the U.S. and Europe with his mastery of diverse musical styles and unique approach to guitar techniques. In addition to his sophisticated original compositions, his repertoire ranges from intricate jazz and Latin masterpieces, to extraordinary arrangements of R&B classics and interpretations of ethnic music from around the world.  His music can be heard on Fox, National Geographic and The Discovery Channel TV programs as well as numerous recorded projects, including his own Stillness of the Heart, an evocative collection of compositions for classical guitar.
Cellist and arranger Fred Lieder has been a fixture on the Washington area music scene for 25 years.   Delighting audiences with classical, jazz, blues, rock and Celtic arrangements - including works by the Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Jimi Hendrix, and Carlos Santana - Lieder may be the only cellist in the D.C. area who has played at such diverse places as the Kennedy Center, Blues Alley, Rams Head, and The Birchmere. His current release is Cello Blues and he has recently published My Cello Has the Blues, an instructional book on playing the blues on cello.

Free Document Shredding Event Coming This Fall

You Get It – We Shred It! It is time to clean out your file cabinets, closetsand desks and get rid of confidential, private, and important personal documents you no longer
need to keep.

Community shredding events help protect individuals from identity theft and consumer fraudwhich are becoming an epidemic in our communities.

This community event will provide residents with the opportunity to have their confidential, private, and important documents destroyed by a professional shredding service at no cost. The
truck from East Coast Shredding is capable of holding 9,000 pounds of paper.

Downtown Tunes Begins May 23 in Leonardtown

Downtown Tunes Begins May 23 in Leonardtown

The ninth season of Downtown Tunes opens in the Leonardtown Square on Saturday, May 23, 2015, starting off a summer-long concert program that features a variety of musical styles including R&B, Acoustic, Classic Rock & Blues and Country.  All performances are on the fourth Saturday of the month and all are free.  Shows begin at 6 pm and will run about three hours.

May’s concert will feature the Leonardtown Square debut of Latrice Carr.  With a background in gospel, performances at international venues, and a repertoire that spans from Etta James to Maroon 5, Ms. Carr

promises to start the 2015 season off with passion, style and soulful R&B.

The series will continue on June 27 with former Tonight’s Alibi front woman Megan Nosek and solo guitarist Josh Airhart playing a funky rhythmic acoustic set, and on July 25 with Jennifer Cooper and Groovespan putting their creative spin on Classic Rock and Blues.  On August 22, the charming country powerhouse Sara Gray returns to the Square - this time joined by rising local soloist Robbie Boothe.

According to series producer James LePore, Sara and Robbie had originally been slated for the June concert, but Sara was given the opportunity to open for country star Luke Bryan.  “What could I say?” quipped LePore.  “It’s a great opportunity for her, and we want to encourage local artists, not hold them back.  So we moved Sara and Robbie to August 22.”

All shows are free, and concert-goers are invited to bring chairs or blankets to sit on. Downtown restaurants will be open before and during the shows, and many of the surrounding local businesses will stay open until 6:00 p.m. to allow for browsing and buying before the concerts start.

The series is organized and hosted by the Leonardtown Business Association and sponsored in part by Quality Built Homes, Winegardner Automotive, Marrick Homes, Guy Distributing, and Big Larry’s Eatery. Rain dates will be the next day, Sunday, for all shows.
