Downtown Tunes Unplugged

This month Downtown Tunes, sponsored by The Leonardtown Business Association, will feature acoustic music on Saturday, July 28, 2012 from 6 – 9:00 p.m. The popular music trio Hamm-It-Ups and The Eds, an acoustic duo of terrific singers and guitarists, take the stage in the Town Square with just their instruments and voices. But don’t let the term, or the numbers, fool you. Even unplugged, these talented musicians are a powerhouse of sound with a wide variety of musical styles. Treat yourself and you family to a good meal, a little ice cream and great music at Downtown Tunes in the Leonardtown Square.

EXTREME HEAT EMERGENCY ADVISORY FOR THE PUBLIC

GOVERNOR O’MALLEY URGES CAUTION DURING CONTINUED HEAT WAVE

ANNAPOLIS, MD (July 5, 2012) – The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has issued a heat advisory across the State for the next several days. As temperatures continue to soar, Governor Martin O’Malley urged Marylanders to take the necessary precautions to prevent heat related illnesses.

“It is important as temperatures reach over 100 degrees that we take the time to check on our family, friends, and neighbors who may be vulnerable to the extreme heat,” said Governor O’Malley. “Even residents in good health can become a victim of heat exhaustion. Whenever possible, avoid spending prolonged time outdoors, stay hydrated and remember to keep in touch with those who may need assistance.”

Hot weather tips:

• Drink plenty of fluids such as water and fruit juices to prevent dehydration — be aware that alcohol can impair the body’s sweat mechanisms, as can fairly common medications such as antihistamines and diuretics.

• Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, and light-colored clothes.

• Avoid direct sunlight by staying in the shade or by wearing sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses.

• When possible, stay in air-conditioned areas. If your home is not air-conditioned, consider a visit to a shopping mall or public library.

• NEVER leave pets or young children in a car, even with the windows cracked.

• Check on elderly relatives or neighbors daily. If you are concerned about an older or vulnerable person, call 211 for assistance.

• Take it easy when outdoors. Athletes and those who work outdoors should, if possible, take short breaks when feeling fatigued. Schedule physical activity during the morning or evening when it is cooler.

Music and More at Leonardtown July First Friday

July’s First Friday is going to be even Better than June’s!

Friday, July 6th is going to have everything June First Friday was going to have – except the rain! Leonardtown Business Association First Friday Committee is once again hosting live music, Info Share on The Square, a Summertime Raffle, and a new charity drive supporting Hope Phones (www.hopephones.org).

Local Classic Rock ‘n’ Roll cover band GeeZer has agreed to come back and play their “Music for the Middle Aged” - songs from bands like the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Santana, Johnny Cash, Jimmy Buffet, the Eagles – but with enough variety to please fans of all ages.

Information tables for LBA members like Craft Guild Shop and the Leonardtown Arts Center, as well as Medstar St. Mary’s Health Connections, will be set up in the Square.

Summertime Raffle tickets are on sale at Port of Leonardtown Winery, Fuzzy Farmers Market, North End Gallery, and Fenwick Street Used Books and Music - $1 each or 12 tickets for $10. Prizes include gift cards from LBA businesses and a Grand Prize - a gorgeous, hand-crafted coffee display table built by artisan carpenter Rob Seltzer of Herring Creek Furniture, www.herringcreekfurniture.com/galleryMain.html. Drop off stations are set up at Port of Leonardtown Winery on Route 5, or in Town at North End Gallery to collect old cell phones. International charity Hope Phones takes all phones, working or not, and erases all data before refurbishing them for sale or safely recycling them. Hope Phones uses revenue from these phones to buy new phones to distribute all over the world to provide communication between doctors, medical centers and people in need of medical attention.
