Sailing Event coming to Leonardtown Wharf- September 11

The Third Annual Leonardtown Wharf Regatta will take place on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at 12:00 noon, with races starting simultaneously from lower Breton Bay, and from the starting line on the water at the Leonardtown Wharf Park. The "Big Boat" Barnacle Cup racers will start near the Potomac and race up Breton Bay, ending near the Wharf Park. The High School racers will start at the same time in front of the breakwater at the Leonardtown Wharf and perform for spectators in the Park until 4 p.m., where they can enjoy pizza and live music from the St. Mary's Ryken Jazz Band. The regatta is open to all monohull sailboats, 20’ and longer. There is an entry fee of $20 per boat. A “round the buoys” race, of a length to be determined by conditions, will count as the first in a series of two races using PHRF non-spinnaker. The second race will begin after the last boat crosses. The Race Committee will group the boats into one of three categories- slower, medium and faster, the second pursuit race will be into Breton Bay all the way to Green Buoy 11 near the wharf. After all boats have crossed the finish line they will parade by the wharf. The results will be posted at 5:00 pm.

The Barnacle Cup sailors will host this event to benefit the St. Mary’s Ryken and Leonardtown High School Sailing Teams. Once both races are complete spectators will be treated to a parade of boats at the Leonardtown Wharf around 3:00 pm.
